30-Day Evaluation Version
A free 30-day evaluation version of dtSearch Desktop 7 (including the dtSearch Spider) is available from the dtSearch web site. Click here or go to www.dtsearch.com and select the "Evaluate" link. The setup program will ask for a serial number to install dtSearch. Check the box to install the evaluation version only and click the Next button.
Installation
The setup program for dtSearch 7 will automatically uninstall dtSearch 6 and install dtSearch 7, and will offer an option to save your existing settings. Any option settings used with dtSearch 6 can continue to be used with dtSearch 7.
Indexes
dtSearch 7 uses a new index format, which is described on this page of the dtSearch web site: http://www.dtsearch.com/index7.html
dtSearch 7 also continues to support the previous index format, so you can continue to search and update your existing indexes that were created with dtSearch 6.
Any new indexes created with dtSearch 7 will be in the new format.
To convert a dtSearch 6 index to the new format using
dtSearch Desktop,
(1) Click Index > Update Index...,
(2) Check the box to Upgrade index to version 7 format.
(3) Click Start Indexing
Conversion takes about as long as compressing an index.
dtSearch 7 can update and search dtSearch 6.x indexes. However, re-indexing with dtSearch 7 is recommended to ensure that hit highlighting is consistent. dtSearch uses word offsets stored in the index to identify the location of hits. Therefore, changes in the file parsers that affect word counting can make highlighting inconsistent if you use an old version of dtSearch to build an index and a new version of dtSearch to search the index.
Please see the dtSearch 7 Release Notes for information on new features.
